💡 Basic Pension is calculated as exactly 50% of your Last Drawn Basic Pay.
How it is Calculated
1
Basic Pension
Under government rules, the standard superannuation pension is 50% of your last drawn basic pay.
2
Dearness Relief (DR)
Pensioners receive Dearness Relief (similar to DA) to offset inflation. This percentage is applied to your Basic Pension amount.
3
Gross Monthly Payout
Your final monthly credit is your Basic Pension plus the Dearness Relief amount. Allowances like HRA or Transport Allowance do not apply after retirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Under the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), it is exactly 50% of the last basic pay or 10-month average (whichever is higher), subject to a minimum of ₹9,000. Under the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), it is 50% of the average basic pay drawn over the last 12 months for 25+ years of service (pro-rated for 10-25 years). The absolute minimum pension under UPS is ₹10,000.
They are mathematically the same. Active employees receive Dearness Allowance (DA), while pensioners receive Dearness Relief (DR). Both are calculated as a percentage to offset inflation, and the rates are typically identical.
Under OPS, the normal family pension is 30% of the last drawn basic pay (minimum ₹9,000). An enhanced rate of 50% is paid for 10 years if the employee dies in service, or 7 years (up to age 67) if death occurs post-retirement. Under UPS, the family pension is simplified to exactly 60% of the employee's assured pension amount.
Yes. Regular monthly pension (uncommuted pension) is treated as "Income from Salary" and is fully taxable according to your income tax slab. However, commuted pension (lump sum taken at retirement) is exempt from tax for government employees.
